What is Botox®?
Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox®, is a non-surgical procedure that relaxes particular muscles in order to give a younger looking complexion. This treatment is particularly popular because of the dramatic results without the use of surgery
Botox can be used with other rejuvenation treatments such as dermal fillers.
The aims of Botox® are:
- To smooth out frown lines, crow’s feet (smile lines) and forehead lines
- To prevent wrinkles
The treatment can last from three to six months depending on the particular individual. With repeated treatments, the effects can last longer.
The operation is achieved either by removing part of the wall of the orbit and, in some patients, by the additional excision of some of the orbital fatty tissue.
The treatment is very quick, usually about 15 minutes. A small needle is used to inject the botulinum toxin underneath the skin into specific muscles. Sedation or local anaesthetic is not required as the needle and amount of liquid used is particularly small and so discomfort, if any, is minimal. As Botox® is minimally invasive and recovery time is quick. Patients can often return to work immediately.

What are dermal fillers?
A dermal filler is injected into the skin to replace collagen cells, fill mild to moderate lines and restore suppleness and shape to the face.
Performed to remove tumours from the pituitary gland – which is responsible for regulating most of the body’s hormones – endoscopic pituitary surgery (also called transsphenoidal endoscopic surgery) is executed through the nose with an instrument called an endoscope.
The aims of dermal fillers are:
- to smooth out wrinkles and facial lines
- to increase fullness to narrow lips
- to enhance sunken cheeks
- to contour the bridge of the nose.
The treatment lasts about four to six months, and it is not permanent.
The treatment usually takes between 30 to 40 minutes depending on the number of lines and wrinkles that are to be treated. It is common to return to work straight after the dermal filler treatment and make-up can be applied to the area immediately after.
